Thriving Industrial Town – Banbury In Oxfordshire, Uk   by Simon Haughtone

Most people link the nursery rhyme ‘Ride a crocked horse’ to Banbury. It lies bordering the most beautiful part of England, Chermwell Valley. It is located on River Chermwell in the north of Oxfordshire, England and falls towards the northwest of London.

The present day Banbury Cross at Horsefair here was erected in 1859. The ancient St Mary’s Church is on the way and has great interiors and majestic tower. The Cross erected on the wedding of Princess Royal to Prince Frederick of Prussia.

Ancient Banbury was a large wool producing place. Most of the town was burnt down in 1628. The rail lines and Oxford Canal were added later and this developed the town drastically. The Canals connects the town to the Midlands.

Its well known for its special fruit pasty called Banbury Cakes which you can buy from any bakery and are similar to Eccles cake. These were exported to as far as Australia at one time. It is still considered as an industrial town. The Alcoa industries are famous aluminium manufacturer.

Thursday and Saturday are the days to shop and High Street is the place. Food, hardware, pets, and many more artefacts are for sale There are some excellent coffee shops for a cuppa.

There is great employment prospects due to rapid growth in the recent years after the Europeon Union was formed. You can find many Polish in the workforce. Christianity and Island are the major religions.

Banbury is named after a local Saxon lord named – Banna. There are free guided walks around town and the Information Centre has more details. The town also stages the annual animal festival called Hobby Horse Festival.

Banbury Museum is a place to summarize the town- history, cakes and agriculture. In today’s world, it is a major thriving commercial town. You can find printing factories, electricals and food processing here.
